EMILY LOUISE OLIN FAMILY

Emma

Emily Louise Olin "Emma" was born August 25,1870 in Austin Township, Mecosta, MI, and died October 3, 1931 in Grand Rapids, Itasca, MN. Her middle name may have been Louisa. She was crippled with polio yet still did all her own milking and chores. She also raised Persian cats in Grand Rapids. While just 16 yeras of age she gave birth to a daughter. Whether she was married to Lottie's father, George Gallagher, or not is not known. They were living in Staples, Minnesota at the time. No record of George can be found or Lottie's birth. The relationship ended and Emma and Lottie moved with the Olin family to Grand Rapids, Minnesota about 1894. Both Emma and Lottie contracted polio and survived.

Lottie Gallagher born about 1886 probably in Staples and died December 30, 1896. She died as the result of a dog bite at age ten. She is buried in an unmarked grave next to her mother. Judging from the many pictures taken of this child she was a great favorite in the family particularly with her aunt, Sadie. See photo on right.

Emily married again in 1894 in Grand Rapids, Itasca Cty, MN to William Sherman Kingston. Williams was born 1867 in Harmony, Vernon, Wisconsin to John Kingston b: 1842 in PA and Margaretta Smith b: 1845 in OH. William died November 27, 1920 in Otter Tail county, MN.

Interestingly, there is no grave found in the Grand Rapids cemetery for Sherman. William is listed as a resident of Grand Rapids in 1896 and then as Sherman Kingston, he is listed with wife-Emma, Uta and Harvey in the 1905 census of Grand Rapids. The Kingston farm was located where the Church of God is currently situated in Grand Rapids. However, William S. Kingston died in Ottertail County. It is possible he is buried there.

Uta is on left

Uta Kingston b: 1900 m: 1st George Allen. There is one infant son listed for Uta and George who died September 29, 1921 in Grand Rapids, MN. She married second to George Borgenson. (No other children known.)

Daughter Kingston born February 4, 1897 who died March 9, 1897.

Harvey Clayton Kingston b: September 9, 1902 in Grand Rapids, Itasca Cty, MN, d: June 10, 1980 Grand Rapids, Itasca County, MN, buried in Coleraine, Itasca Cty, MN, m: May 11, 1936 in Iowa to Aili Pelto b: March 20, 1913 Bovey, Itasca, MN, d: January 2001 Grand Rapids, MN and had no children. Harvey ran a stand in Lester Park near Duluth, St. Louis Cty, MN. He lost his arm as a young boy while helping his father saw logs.

Floyd Leon Kingston b: December 13, 1905 in Grand Rapids, MN, d: February 14, 1990 in St. Louis Cty, MN married Helen E. Sholtz and had two children:

Shirley Jeanne (Jeanie) Kingston b: December 6, 1927 in St. Loius county, Minnesota, m: Di Marie

James Leon Kingston b: May 12, 1930 in Itasca county, was a test pilot and was killed in a crash in Florida in 1967.

Floyd Kingston and Helen Sholtz were divorced in the 1930's. He was living in Grand Rapids, MN in the 1940 US Census. He moved to Duluth in the 40's. He remarried to Mamie Augusta Saukko May 17, 1961 in St. Louis county. He died February 14, 1990 in St. Louis county, Minnesota.

1895 census shows William with Emma and Lotta (age 9) living in Grand Rapids, MN.

In the 1920 U.S. Census, William S. Kingston is listed as living in Fergus Falls, Otter Tail Cty, MN. He is shown as an inmate. There was a state hospital in Fergus Falls.

An interesting note-There was a Lottie Kingston born in about 1890 in Staples who married February 3, 1912 in Bessemer, Gogebic Cty, MI to Hug Scherck. Perhaps this was a sister to William? Lottie Gallagher is listed as Lottie Kingston in later records, but of course she died in childhood.
